How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK? (2026 Pricing Guide)

SEO in the UK typically costs £500–£5,000+ per month depending on scope and agency. Here's what actually drives the price — and how to read a quote before you sign one.

"How much does SEO cost?" is the wrong first question. The right one is "what am I actually paying for, and how do I know it's working?" Two agencies quoting £800/month and £3,000/month for the same website aren't necessarily offering different quality — they're often offering completely different scopes, and the invoice alone won't tell you which.

Here's what UK SEO pricing actually looks like in 2026, what drives the number up or down, and how to evaluate a quote properly before you commit to a monthly retainer.

What UK SEO Actually Costs in 2026

Across the UK market, monthly SEO retainers generally fall into four bands:

£300–£800/month — Entry-level or freelance

Usually one person, part-time on your account, running a handful of on-page fixes and maybe two articles a month. Can work for a very small local business with light competition. Rarely includes a real technical audit, and reporting is often a generic dashboard rather than a strategy call.

£800–£2,500/month — Small to mid-size agency

A proper team (strategist, writer, sometimes a developer), a real technical SEO component, and consistent content output. This is where most growing UK businesses land. The gap in quality within this band is the widest — ask what's actually delivered, not just the headline number.

£2,500–£5,000/month — Established or specialist agency

Deeper technical work, dedicated content strategy, often includes digital PR or link building, and more senior staff on the account. Makes sense once organic search is a primary revenue channel, not a side experiment.

£5,000–£15,000+/month — Enterprise retainers

Multi-market SEO, large content teams, custom tooling. Relevant for large e-commerce catalogues or multi-location businesses — overkill for most startups and SMEs.

Dricomm's own Growth Plans sit at £495–£1,995+/month — inside the lower half of the small-to-mid agency band — with the scope of each tier listed in full on our pricing page, not hidden behind a sales call.

Why the Same Task Costs Different Amounts at Different Agencies

The number on the quote reflects a combination of these factors, not just how "good" an agency is:

Competitiveness of your keywords. Ranking for "accountant" in a major city is a different project from ranking for "accountant for e-commerce sellers" in the same city. Agencies price partly based on how much content and link-building effort the target terms will realistically require.

Technical starting point. A site with a clean technical foundation costs less to work on than one with years of accumulated issues. If your current site fails our technical SEO checklist, expect the first few months of any engagement to include cleanup work regardless of who you hire.

Content volume and quality. Two articles a month from a generalist writer costs less than five articles a month from someone who actually understands your industry. Word count isn't the variable that matters — research depth and specificity are, and both take time that shows up in the price.

In-house vs. outsourced production. Agencies that outsource writing or technical work to cheaper subcontractors can quote lower — but quality control and communication usually suffer. Ask directly who does the actual work.

Reporting and strategy overhead. A monthly strategy call with a senior strategist costs more to deliver than an automated dashboard emailed on the 1st of the month. Decide which one you'll actually use before you pay for it.

Questions That Reveal What You're Really Paying For

Before signing any UK SEO retainer, ask:

  • Exactly how many articles, and how many hours of technical work, are included each month?
  • Who writes the content — an in-house strategist, or an outsourced freelancer paid per word?
  • Is there a fixed minimum term, or can I cancel month to month?
  • What does the report actually show — rankings and traffic, or business outcomes like leads and revenue?
  • What happens in month one specifically? (If the answer is vague, that's a signal.)

A vague answer to any of these is worth more than the number on the quote.

Why "Cheapest" Is the Wrong Filter

The lowest quote in a batch of proposals is almost never the lowest total cost. An entry-level retainer that produces no measurable movement for six months has cost you six months of compounding organic growth you can't buy back — SEO results build cumulatively over time, so a slow or wrong start is expensive in a way that doesn't show up on the invoice.

The more useful filter is scope clarity: can the agency tell you, in writing, exactly what happens each month and why — before you've paid anything? What we choose to check in a free audit is a reasonable benchmark for what a serious technical review looks like, paid or not.
